A sofa bed in a hotel room is not an accessory. It’s a way to sell the same room to three guests instead of two, to attract families with children without building new rooms, and to justify a higher rate for a suite with a sitting area. We make sofa beds for hotels with mechanisms reinforced for intensive hotel use, upholstery that stands up to daily wear, and internal mattresses thick enough for a comfortable night’s sleep. Finishes are coordinated with the rest of the room’s furniture, with delivery and installation included worldwide.

Types of sofa beds for hotel rooms

Why the mechanism is the most important part of a hotel sofa bed
When choosing a sofa bed for hotel use, the first thing people look at is the upholstery and the design. The last thing they check is the mechanism. That’s exactly backwards. Upholstery can be changed or covered with a throw. A mechanism that fails makes the sofa unusable and calls for the part, or the whole piece, to be replaced.
In a busy hotel room, where the sofa bed is used three or four times a week, you reach 3,000 cycles in under two years. The mechanisms we use are tested for at least 10,000 cycles, with dampers that keep opening and closing smooth even for guests who have no idea how that particular mechanism works.
The second critical point is how easy the mechanism is to open. A guest arriving in the room at midnight with their luggage doesn’t read the sofa bed instructions. They pull, push and twist in whatever sequence seems logical to them. If the mechanism needs a precise sequence of movements or a particular amount of force, it gets forced the wrong way. The mechanisms we build for hotel use open intuitively in two movements: one to release, one to open. No hidden steps, no sequence to remember.
The internal mattress: the part that makes the difference to the quality of the stay
The internal mattress we use in hotel sofa beds has a minimum thickness of 12 cm for single models and 14 cm for double models, with a foam density calibrated for sustained use. The difference a guest feels between sleeping on the sofa bed and sleeping on the main bed should be minimal: the goal isn’t a lower-quality extra bed, but a second sleeping space with a proper standard.
A third element that’s often overlooked is the support base under the mattress. In low-quality sofa beds, the mattress sits directly on the metal frame of the mechanism, which over time leaves impressions and creates pressure points. Our models have a wooden slatted base that distributes weight evenly and keeps the mattress in the right shape for the whole life of the piece.
Sofa beds in suites: how to integrate one without it looking like a compromise
In 4 and 5 star hotel suites, a sofa bed is often the solution for accommodating a third or fourth guest without the room losing its identity as a suite. The problem is that almost every sofa bed, even the expensive ones, has a “sofa bed” look that gives its function away even when closed: the upholstery doesn’t match the sofa cushions, the lower edge has a profile that hints at the mechanism underneath, and the proportions aren’t those of an ordinary sofa.
For high-end suites we build sofa beds with a solid wood frame and upholstery in fabric or eco-leather matched to the quality of the room’s other upholstered pieces. The mechanism is hidden within the frame and stays out of sight both closed and while opening. The sofa cushions are coordinated with the bedspread and the armchairs. Closed, the sofa bed looks like a proper sofa in every respect: a guest walking into the room doesn’t see a compromise, they see a coherent piece of furniture.
The position of the sofa bed in a suite needs to be worked out at the design stage, not tacked on at the end. A sofa bed placed correctly in relation to the window, the sleeping area and the entrance to the room adds value to the suite. A sofa bed placed wherever it happens to fit, in whatever corner is left over once the rest of the furniture is arranged, takes value away from it. The free site survey lets us work out the best position on the real floor plan before we produce a single piece of furniture.
FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum width of the open bed in single sofa beds?
Single models open to a width of 80 cm, double models to 140 cm. We also make intermediate sizes on request, depending on the space available in the room.
How much space does the sofa bed take up when open compared with when closed?
It depends on the mechanism. Standard fold-out models take up around 90 cm more depth than in their closed position. Compact book-fold models only use vertical space, without adding any depth to the front. The choice depends on the space available in front of the sofa, which we assess during the site survey.
Is the sofa bed upholstery resistant to intensive hotel use?
Yes. We use eco-leather resistant to abrasion and professional cleaning products, or fabrics with a stain treatment and a high Martindale rub count. The choice of upholstery depends on the property’s setting and the expected level of use.
Do you make sofa beds in the same finishes as the room furniture?
Yes. Sofa bed upholstery can be coordinated with the fabrics used for headboards, armchairs and other upholstered pieces in the room. Colour matching is worked out during the site survey, based on existing finishes or those chosen for the rest of the furniture.
How long does it take to produce and deliver a hotel sofa bed?
Production takes around 5-6 weeks from order confirmation, slightly longer than unupholstered furniture owing to the complexity of the mechanism. Delivery and installation are included worldwide.
Does the fold-away sofa bed require any work on the wall?
Yes. The vertical fold-away wall bed model needs a reinforced wall fixing, which we check and carry out during installation. The wall structure is assessed during the free site survey to confirm the installation is feasible.
