The bed base is the piece of furniture guests don’t see but feel every night. It’s what the mattress rests on, what determines whether the bed is firm or soft, whether it creaks when you turn over, and whether the centre starts to sag after six months of intensive use. We make bed bases for hotels to measure in any dimension, with a reinforced structure for intensive hotel use, a covering resistant to daily use, with or without storage. Can be coordinated with headboards and bed frames in matching finishes. Delivery and installation included worldwide.

Types of Bed Base for Hotel Rooms

The Bed Base Is Important for Sleep Quality in a Hotel Room

When a guest writes in a review that the bed was uncomfortable, the problem is almost never the mattress: it’s the base the mattress rests on. A good-quality mattress on a base with sagging or poorly positioned slats loses much of its supportive properties. Slats spaced too far apart leave the mattress unsupported at intermediate points. Slats that are too rigid don’t cushion nighttime movement. Slats that flex downward over time create a soft central area that the guest perceives as a dip.

The spacing between the slats is the most critical parameter: the slats we use are spaced no more than 6 cm apart, which is the measurement that guarantees uniform support across the whole surface of the mattress regardless of the guest’s weight. The foam in a good-quality mattress can’t evenly distribute weight over a slat every 10 or 12 cm: the pressure points are felt.

The second critical parameter is the thickness of the slats. The 8 mm slats in economy frames flex visibly under the weight of an adult of normal build and break under the weight of a heavier guest or a sudden sideways drop. The 10-12 mm slats with a central rib that we use bear variable dynamic loads without perceptibly flexing and without breaking in normal use.

Storage Bed Bases: How They Work in a Hotel and When They Make Sense

A storage bed base is a choice that makes sense in specific contexts and less sense in others. Understanding the difference makes it possible to take a decision that proves right in the long run, rather than regretting a purchase after six months.

It makes sense in rooms where storage space is limited: rooms without a cupboard, rooms where the wardrobe is sized to the minimum, rooms intended for long stays where the guest needs more space to store clothes. In these contexts, the compartment under the bed solves a real problem without adding furniture.

It makes less sense in high-turnover properties where the storage is almost never used by the guest: if the average stay is one or two nights, the guest never opens the compartment and the opening mechanism accumulates cycles without any benefit. In these cases, a reinforced base without storage is the simplest and most durable choice.
When choosing a storage base, the opening mechanism is the point to assess most carefully. The gas piston has to be calibrated to the specific weight of the chosen mattress: a piston that’s too weak won’t hold the mattress open, one that’s too strong makes opening a struggle. The pistons we use are chosen based on the mattress weight declared by the property and are replaced free of charge if they turn out to be poorly calibrated after installation.

Bed Base Sizes: Standard and Made to Measure

The standard sizes for hotel bed bases are the same as for double and single beds: 80, 90, 100, 120 cm wide for singles, 140, 160, 180 cm for doubles, and from 190 to 210 cm in length. These sizes cover most standard situations, but many Italian hotel rooms, especially those created in historic buildings, have spaces that don’t fit any of these standard sizes.

A room with a back wall 197 cm long can’t fit a 200 cm long bed without the bed touching the side walls or leaving negligible gaps on one side. A 195 cm long base solves the problem without compromise. A room where the bathroom door is accessed from the side of the bed requires the base to be positioned a certain distance from the wall: if the room’s total width doesn’t allow this distance with a standard base, we make a narrower base that recovers the necessary centimetres.

We make bed bases in any dimension, with a tolerance of 1 cm against the requested measurement. Measurements are taken during the free site visit, together with the position of the other furniture and the flow of movement in the room. The 3D render we hand over before production shows the base positioned in the room at the real measurements, so everything can be checked before any furniture is made.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Is a bed base in two separate halves as stable as one in a single piece?

Yes. The central join is reinforced with metal hinges and alignment pins that prevent any relative movement between the two halves. In terms of mattress support, the two versions are equivalent. The advantage of the two-piece version is how much easier it is to carry up narrow stairs.

How much space is needed under the bed for cleaning with a base without storage?

Standard feet bring the base’s lower edge to around 15-18 cm from the floor, which is enough for cleaning with a standard mop. For greater heights, we use taller feet on request, up to 30 cm from the floor.

Does the storage opening mechanism need periodic maintenance?

The gas pistons don’t need routine maintenance. If, after years of use, the pressure drops and the mechanism no longer holds the mattress open, the pistons can be replaced without having to change the whole base. Replacement takes about 20 minutes and needs no special tools.

Do you make bed bases in the same finishes as the headboard and bed frame?

Yes. All bed bases are available in the same faux leather or fabric finishes we use for headboards and bed frames. Colour coordination is defined during the site visit based on the choices made for the rest of the room’s furniture.

How long does it take to produce and deliver a bed base?

Production takes around 4-6 weeks from order confirmation. Delivery and installation are included worldwide and are agreed with the property to minimise operational disruption.

Can I order just the bed base without the headboard or frame?

Yes. We also make bed bases as a standalone supply, regardless of who made the existing headboard and bed frame. If you provide a sample of the existing finish, we make the base in the most compatible finish available.
